Reward customers when they enter or leave a segment

Segment campaigns let you automatically give store credit when a customer enters or leaves a Shopify customer segment. The most popular use is win‑back: the moment a customer becomes inactive (and falls into your "lapsed customers" segment), Redeemly rewards them with credit to pull them back.

This guide explains how the feature works, how to set it up, and — importantly — the behaviors that aren't obvious from the screen.

How it works

You pick one of your existing Shopify customer segments and a trigger:

  • Enter the segment — reward the customer the moment they become a member (e.g. they just became inactive → win‑back).
  • Leave the segment — reward the customer the moment they stop being a member (e.g. they left your "high‑risk churn" segment).

When a customer actually moves in or out of that segment, Redeemly issues the store credit you configured and (optionally) emails them about it.

Key idea: the campaign reacts to a customer crossing the boundary of the segment — not to simply being inside it.

Creating a segment campaign

  1. Go to Campaigns → New campaign → "Customer segment changes."
  2. Campaign name — an internal label only; customers never see it.
  3. Customer segment — choose the Shopify segment to watch.
  4. TriggerEnter or Leave.
  5. Reward — the store‑credit amount, and how many days until it expires.
  6. Limit rewards per customer — how many times a single customer can be rewarded by this campaign (see below).
  7. Email — customize the subject and wording, or turn the email off.
  8. Status — Enabled or Disabled.
  9. Save.

That's it — the campaign starts watching for segment changes as soon as it's enabled.

Things to know (please read)

These are the behaviors that surprise people most often.

⏱️ Only customers who enter/leave after the campaign is enabled are rewarded

The campaign does not reward the customers who are already in the segment when you create it. It only rewards customers who cross the boundary from this point forward.

👉 To reward the people already in the segment right now, use a one‑time Bulk import (the link is shown on the campaign page next to the member count).

💱 The reward is automatically converted to each customer's currency

You set the amount in your store's currency, but each customer is rewarded in their own currency, based on their address. A "£5" campaign gives a French customer roughly €5.85, a Canadian customer roughly CA$9, and so on.

Because of this, a single campaign's rewards can appear across several currencies in its analytics — that's expected. Use the currency selector on the campaign's analytics to switch between them.

⚡ It's fast, but not instant

There's usually a short delay (a few seconds, occasionally up to a couple of minutes) between the customer changing segment and the reward being issued. If you're testing, give it a moment.

🔒 The segment and trigger are locked after creation

Once a campaign is created you can't change which segment it watches or whether it's enter/leave. You can still change the name, reward, limit, email, and status. To target a different segment or trigger, create a new campaign.

✏️ Editing the segment's definition does NOT reward anyone

If you edit the segment's rules in Shopify so that new customers now match, those customers are not rewarded — only a genuine enter/leave event triggers a reward. Redeemly shows a warning on the campaign page when it notices the segment's definition has changed since you set it up, so you can review it.

🗑️ Deleting the segment stops the campaign

If you delete the segment in Shopify, the campaign can never trigger again, and Shopify gives no warning of its own. Redeemly shows a critical alert on the campaign page when this happens — you'll need to create a new campaign on a different segment.

🔁 Limit rewards per customer

  • Checked (default = 1): each customer is rewarded at most this many times by this campaign — even if they leave and re‑enter the segment repeatedly.
  • Unchecked (no limit): a customer is rewarded every time they enter (or leave) the segment again.

The limit counts all rewards this campaign has ever given that customer, including any you've since cancelled.

1️⃣ One campaign per segment + trigger

You can't have two active campaigns watching the same segment with the same trigger. You can run one Enter and one Leave campaign on the same segment at the same time.

✅ No double‑rewarding

Shopify occasionally reports the same change more than once. Redeemly automatically ignores duplicates, so a customer is never rewarded twice for the same event.

⏸️ Disabling pauses everything

Setting a campaign to Disabled stops it from watching the segment entirely (no rewards, no emails). Re‑enabling it resumes watching from that point on.

The campaign email

Each segment campaign has its own email — its own subject and wording, on the same layout as your "Rewarded credit" email. A few things to know:

  • It's independent of your store‑wide email switch. A campaign email can send even if your global "Rewarded credit email" is turned off — and vice versa. The campaign's own toggle decides.
  • It always requires marketing consent. The campaign email is only sent to customers who have opted in to email marketingeven if your store is set to send credit emails to all customers. (Segment‑campaign emails are marketing messages, not transactional ones, so they follow marketing‑consent rules.)
  • The credit is still issued either way. If the email is off, or the customer isn't subscribed, they still get the store credit — they just don't get the email notification.
  • Multi‑language wording is supported per market, like your other Redeemly emails.

Prefer to send the email from your marketing platform?

If you use Klaviyo, Omnisend, Attentive, or Shopify Flow, you can turn the Redeemly campaign email off and trigger your own automation instead. Segment campaigns send a dedicated event for this:

  • Event / metric / trigger name: "Segment Campaign Credit Rewarded" (Klaviyo, Omnisend, Attentive) or the "Segment Campaign Credit Rewarded" trigger (Shopify Flow).
  • It's separate from the regular "Store Credit Rewarded" event — so your existing credit flows are not accidentally triggered by segment campaigns.
  • Every event carries a Campaign ID (e.g. cmp_0f299hnekb) and Campaign name, so with several campaigns you can add a trigger filter/condition on the Campaign ID to build campaign‑specific automations.

You'll find each campaign's ID in the Marketing automation card on its page (with a copy button). For step‑by‑step setup, see the companion article: "Send segment campaign emails from your marketing platform (Klaviyo, etc.)."

"My customer wasn't rewarded" — quick checklist

  1. Is the campaign Enabled?
  2. Did the customer actually enter/leave the segment after the campaign was enabled? (Already‑in‑segment customers need a bulk import.)
  3. Does the customer's change match the trigger (an enter campaign won't fire on a leave)?
  4. Have they already hit the per‑customer limit?
  5. Has the segment been deleted or redefined in Shopify? (Check the campaign page for an alert.)
  6. Still waiting? Give it a minute — there can be a short delay.

For the email specifically: confirm the campaign email is enabled, and that the customer is subscribed to email marketing (the credit is still issued even when the email isn't sent).
