Credit expiration FAQ's
Store Credit Expiration Dates
Can I set an expiration date for store credit?
Yes, you can set an expiration date for store credit within Redeemly. This helps encourage timely usage while allowing you to manage your loyalty and promotional campaigns effectively.
What should I consider before setting expiration dates?
Before setting an expiration date, check your country’s regulations on store credit expirations. Many regions allow store credit to expire if issued for loyalty and marketing purposes, but legal requirements vary.
Additionally, we strongly recommend clearly stating your store credit expiration policy in your store’s Terms & Conditions and displaying it within tooltips on relevant pages to maintain transparency with customers.
When does store credit expire?
Store credit expires at the end of the day on the set expiration date, based on your Shopify store’s timezone. If a customer is in a different timezone, the credit still expires according to your store’s time, not theirs.
How does store credit expire when customers have multiple credits?
If a customer has multiple store credits with different expiration dates, the system deducts credits starting with the earliest expiration date first.
For example:
- On March 9, 2024, you issue $10 store credit expiring March 10, 2024.
- On March 10, 2024, you issue another $10 store credit expiring March 15, 2024.
- If the customer spends $10 on March 9, 2024, the first credit (expiring March 10, 2024) is used first.
- The remaining $10 expires on March 15, 2024, unless used earlier.
Can expired store credits be reactivated?
No, expired store credits cannot be reinstated or used. However, you have the option to manually issue new credits if you wish to extend an expired balance.
Will customers be notified before their store credit expires?
Shopify does not send automatic expiration notifications. However, you can use Redeemly’s built-in email system or third-party tools like Klaviyo to send reminders before store credits expire.
Can I disable store credit expiration?
Yes, you can choose not to set expiration dates. If no expiry is set, customers will retain their credits indefinitely unless manually adjusted.
How can I make expiration terms clear to customers?
To ensure customers understand store credit expiration, we recommend the following best practices:
- State the policy in your store’s Terms & Conditions
Clearly outline whether store credits expire, their duration, and how they can be used.
- Use tooltips in key areas
Display a brief message in areas where store credits are shown:
- Product pages
- Cart
- Order confirmation / Thankyou pages
- Send automated email reminders
Set up automated expiration alerts using Redeemly or Klaviyo.
These reminders encourage customers to use their credits while avoiding confusion or disputes.
By clearly communicating your expiration policy, you create transparency, build customer trust, and encourage repeat purchases. 🚀
